This is the first book I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn about UX. Shorter and more accessible than its predecessor, Inside the Gamer's Brain, it gives readers an understanding of all the challenges and tasks involved in the profession of UX designer.
If you are a video game designer or aspiring designer and want to deepen your understanding of what players feel this book is very useful. It is particularly suited for:
- acquiring a solid foundation in human-centered UX (cognitive and behavioral)
- translating these principles into a gaming context (where “user” = player)
- avoiding the trap of “pretty but unusable”
- integrating accessibility and inclusion considerations from the outset
If you already have extensive experience in digital product UX and are only looking for highly specialized game UX, this book will be a good refresher, but it may lack specific game examples.
